What were the primary causes of the American Revolution ?

There were several causes of the American Revolution. One cause was the restrictions the British placed on the colonists. The Proclamation of 1763 prevented the colonists from moving to the lands the British gained from France as a result of the French and Indian War. Some colonists refused to obey this law. There were several causes of the American Revolution. One cause was the restrictions the British placed on the colonists. The Proclamation of 1763 prevented the colonists from moving to the lands the British gained from France as a result of the French and Indian War. Some colonists refused to obey this law. Then the British, with the passage of the Quartering Act, required the colonists to provide housing for the soldiers who were enforcing this unpopular law. The colonists were not happy with these laws.

Another cause was taxes. The colonists felt the taxes created by the Stamp Act and the Townshend Acts were illegal. The colonists had no representatives in Parliament. They believed their rights were being violated since the tax laws were passed without the colonists having representatives that could speak about and vote on these proposed taxes. In Britain, the people have representatives who vote on proposed tax laws before those tax laws are passed.

A third cause was the increasing defiance of the colonists that was then followed by conflicts between the colonists and the British military. When the colonists were protesting outside of the Custom house in Boston, shots were fired. The Boston Massacre, as this event was called, was the first time that colonists were killed by the British military. When the colonists destroyed the tea in the Boston Tea Party in December 1773, the British passed the Intolerable Acts. The colonists refused to obey these laws, and they formed their own militias. When the battles between the colonists and the British occurred at Lexington and at Concord, with many casualties occurring on both sides, many colonists believed it was only a matter of time before the colonists would declare their independence from Great Britain. This declaration of freedom occurred on July 4, 1776.

There were many factors that led to the start of the Revolutionary War.
