After emerging from the wreckage, Ralph and Piggy made their way towards the lagoon. They were talking about the other people on the plane. Piggy suggested that some of the kids were still alive. The two boys were uncertain about the possibility of having grownups on the island.
The two boys found a pool of warm water and Ralph got in to swim. He also realized that Piggy could not swim. Piggy informed Ralph that he was not allowed to swim because he was asthmatic. Ralph, on the other hand, informed Piggy that his father, a commander in the Navy, taught him how to swim when he was five. Further, Ralph informed Piggy that his father would rescue them when he gets information of their wreckage. However, Piggy was not optimistic because of what the pilot said. The pilot had earlier informed the passengers about an atomic bomb and Piggy concluded that everyone was dead.
“How does he know we’re here?”
Because, thought Ralph, because, because. The roar from the reef became very distant.
“They’d tell him at the airport.”
Piggy shook his head, put on his flashing glasses and looked down at Ralph.
“Not them. Didn’t you hear what the pilot said? About the atom bomb?
They’re all dead.”
