How can I analyze the character Novalee Nation in Where the Heart Is by Billie Letts?

We first meet Novalee riding in a car with her boyfriend. She is very much pregnant and has a great innoncence about her. She seems to feel comfortable with her boyfriend, but when she asks him to stop at a Walmart, so that she can pick up something, when she comes back out of the store, he has taken off and deserted her.

Not knowing what to do, and having no money, she goes back into the Walmart and remains in there even after the store closes for the night. She has no idea what to do, so she continues to "live" at the Walmart, since she is helpless to do anything else.

Eventually, she gives birth to a baby girl at the Walmart. She is then helped and she and her baby are taken to a nearby hospital. People in the community are happy to help her, but Novalee knows that somehow, when she and the baby, who she has named Americus, leave the hospital, she must grow up quickly, find a place for she and the baby to live, find a job, and get on with life.

Throughout the book, Novalee shows great strength of character and makes a good life for herself and her small daughter. There are obstacles that she encounters, but she meets them head-on and becomes a mature, responsible, caring and loving young woman.
