The Hound of the Baskervilles boasts many fascinating characters. Here are eight of the main ones. I am also including a link to the summary of the novel to help you with the second part of your question.
1. Sherlock Holmes: the iconic detective. He is brilliant, logical, and aloof. He discerns details others overlook and draws insightful conclusions from them. The novel begins with a demonstration of these skills as he correctly describes Dr. Mortimer before he even arrives.
2. Dr. John Watson: Holmes’ trusted friend. Watson records Holmes’ adventures, although Holmes sometimes thinks the stories are focused too much on drama and not enough on logic.
3. Sir Henry Baskerville: the intended victim. Sir Henry has arrived at the estate after the mysterious death of his uncle, Sir Hugo Baskerville. He has lived in America and just arrived to claim his inheritance. His family is supposedly cursed by a demonic hound that even led to the death of his uncle and now threatens him. He feels a strong family loyalty and will not desert his ancestral estate despite the possible danger.
4. Dr. James Mortimer: the Baskerville’s family physician. He approaches Sherlock Holmes in order to investigate the death of Sir Hugo and ascertain the danger to Sir Henry. His is amiable, somewhat absent-minded, a loyal friend, and extremely intelligent.
5. Jack Stapleton: a naturalist neighbor. Mr. Stapleton lives with his supposed sister not far from the Baskerville estate. He befriends Sir Henry. He is living on the moor in order to indulge his passion for butterflies.
6. Beryl Stapleton: lives with Jack Stapleton. Introduced as Mr. Stapleton’s sister, Beryl Stapleton is in reality his wife. Jack Stapleton beats her and she lives in fear of him. However, she does not want to see Sir Henry harmed and gives Dr. Watson and Sir Henry cryptic warnings.
7. John Barrymore: the butler of Baskerville Hall. A mysterious man with a full beard, Barrymore and his ancestors have worked for the Baskerville family for generations. Yet he gives Sir Henry notice that he and his wife Ethel will be leaving shortly. Sir Henry realizes the man is afraid of something.
8. Ethel Barrymore: the housekeeper of Baskerville Hall. As mysterious as her husband, she cries in the night. We later learn she is the sister of Selden, a notorious murderer who escaped from the insane asylum.
There are certainly other characters in the novel, but these are eight important ones. Below please find the link to the summary.
