Zaroff gives his victims (prey) a three-hour head start. He also gives them a knife (how generous). Additionally, Zaroff gives each victim a supply of food, and Zaroff claims that he will only hunt his prey with a small caliber pistol of limited range. Still, Zaroff gets a gun and his victim gets a knife. That hardly seems fair.

"I give him a supply of food and an excellent hunting knife. I give him three hours' start. I am to follow, armed only with a pistol of the smallest caliber and range."
Apparently Zaroff has a thing for the number three, because his quarry must evade him for three days. If the person manages that, then Zaroff lets that person go free, or at least that is what Zaroff claims. Nobody has ever managed to elude Zaroff for that long.
"If my quarry eludes me for three whole days, he wins the game."
In addition to the three-hour head start, food, and knife, Zaroff also makes sure that his prey are in excellent physical condition. He feeds and exercises each person until he or she is in peak physical form.
"I treat these visitors with every consideration. They get plenty of good food and exercise. They get into splendid physical condition."
