Andrew Jackson worked to get the common person more involved in the government. He used the spoils system to give government jobs to the common people. Many of these people had supported his bid to become President. President Jackson also supported the use of nominating conventions to choose the leaders of the political party. This allowed the party's members to choose the party’s candidates instead of the party’s leaders making these choices.
Andrew Jackson also believed the national bank had too much influence on politics and in our lives. He felt the bank favored the wealthy. He worked to prevent the extension of the bank’s charter in 1832. He was successful in doing this, and he took steps to cripple the bank before its charter expired. He put the government’s money in state banks. These banks made it easier for the common person to a get a loan.
Andrew Jackson supported ideas that many Populists supported.
