Eugene McCarthy was concerned about President Johnson’s policies in Vietnam. He believed we shouldn’t increase our involvement in the Vietnam War. He believed President Johnson was making a mistake by getting us more and more involved in Vietnam. He believed there should be a negotiated settlement. He saw no progress being made to make that happen. As a result, Eugene McCarthy decided to run for the Democratic Party’s nomination for President in 1968.

Eugene McCarthy had many concerns. Eugene McCarthy believed it was wrong for such a strong country like the United States to fight and inflict damage on such a weak country like North Vietnam. He believed the casualty rate in South Vietnam alone was too high. In South Vietnam, there were too many civilian casualties, and in North Vietnam, too much property was being destroyed. He also was concerned about the high number of American casualties as a result of our involvement in this conflict. He also felt the financial impact of the war was too high for us to justify being involved in Vietnam. He believed our involvement in Vietnam weakened our ability to provide to other countries around the world. For these reasons, Eugene McCarthy decided to run for the Democratic Party’s nomination for President in 1968. He was very much against President Johnson's policies regarding our involvement in the Vietnam War.
