The bombing that took place at the 117th running of the Boston Marathon, held on April 15, 2013, killed three people. Two pressure-cooker bombs hidden in backpacks went off near the finish line at about 2:50 pm, scattering shrapnel through the crowd. Two young women and an eight-year-old boy lost their lives, and more than 260 other people were wounded.
In addition to the race spectators who were killed by the bombs themselves, one of the bombers, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, died as a result of a shootout with police four days after the attack. A young police officer, Sean Collier, was murdered by the bombers the night of the attack as well. Dzhokar Tsarnaev, Tamerlan's brother and the remaining perpetrator of the Boston Marathon attack, has been sentenced to death and so if the death penalty remains active in the United States for the foreseeable future, he too will become a casualty of the Boston bombings. Therefore, while three individuals died when the bombs exploded, at least two others have died as a result of the bombing and most likely a third will as well, bringing the number of casualties to a total of six.
