Boo's "big scene" takes place in Chapter 28 when Jem and Scout are walking home from the Maycomb Halloween festival. It is a dark, October night, and Jem thinks he hears someone following them on their walk home. The noise Jem hears is actually Bob Ewell, who has been stalking the children and plotting his revenge. Bob Ewell attacks the children out of nowhere. Scout is unable to see the attacker or the individuals involved in the scuffle because she is wearing a cumbersome costume. Scout mentions that she feels Jem's hand leave hers, and that someone begins squeezing her tightly before the person gets jerked backwards. Scout notices that there are four people fighting under the tree but cannot identify them. When Scout finally gets her bearings, she looks up and sees a man staggering down the road, carrying Jem. The man who is carrying Jem is Boo Radley. Boo Radley was silently watching the children walk home and saw Bob Ewell attack them. Boo Radley ran outside to protect the children and killed Bob Ewell using Bob's own knife. He saved the lives of Atticus' children which is a significant moment throughout the novel.
