What are SMART goals? |

SMART is an acronym used in the formation of goals. A goal is an ambition or desired result. SMART goals are used by businesses and school districts or teachers. SMART goals are often used during project management, employee-performance management, and personal development. The meaning of each letter in the SMART acronym are identified below.


S = Specific


In this stage of SMART goal development, an individual is to identify exactly what he/she strives to accomplish.

M = Measureable


In this stage of SMART goal development, data that will be used to indicate the goal has been achieved is identified.


A = Achievable


In this stage of SMART goal development, the materials, skills, resources, and finances required to complete the goal are identified.  


R = Relevant


In this stage of SMART goal development, an explanation as to how the goal is related to the mission of an organization is provided.


T = Timely


In this stage of SMART goal development, a specific timeline for the completion of the goal is identified. If multiple stages are required to complete the goal, then the timeframe for each stage is identified.
