The short answer to this question is that Nick fears his house is on fire because it is two o'clock in the morning and the whole sky above it seems to be lit up. It turns out it is just the intense light coming from Gatsby's house next door that is lighting up the sky. It is so bright that, as Nick gets out of his taxi and sees Gatsby walking over to him, he tells his friend that his house is lit up like it is the World's Fair. By way of explanation, Gatsby says he has been looking around his home, into some of the rooms.
